Ayushmann Khurrana OCDAyushmann Khurrana, the lead actor of the runaway success, Vicky Donor, was seen walking out of a Holi party absolutely spotless. When asked how he had managed to escape without a single stain, Ayushmann confessed that he suffers from OCD or Obsessive compulsive disorder for cleanliness. Usually one to avoid Holi all together, the actor was out promoting his next flick Humara Bajaj. He went on to say that as a part of his ritualistic behavior he washes his hands a number of times in a day, and even carries a dental kit to brush his teeth three to four times in a day.

What is OCD?

OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder is a condition where a person feels compelled to perform the same act repeatedly in a ritualistic manner. A person suffering from OCD is fraught with unwanted thoughts of impending doom, making these thoughts intrusive in nature and cause the person severe anxiety. They are usually very unpleasant thoughts and fill the person with apprehension, fear and worry. The repetitive behavior is a way for the person to relieve this anxiety.

Usually people, who suffer from this disorder, have a low impulse control. It is believed that it is because of the lack of complete formation of a certain part of the brain which is responsible for primitive responses in humans.

Some of the common symptoms of this condition are:

  • Having involuntary and seemingly uncontrollable thoughts
  • Feeling compelled to perform certain actions repetitively, or for a fixed number of repetitions.
  • Feeling of doom or that something will go wrong, if you don't perform a particular action a certain way or number of times.

Although these are very generalized symptoms, one must understand the exact meaning of Obsessive Compulsive disorder and learn to differentiate between the different types of OCD.

Amongst the 5 broad categories of the condition, Ayushmann can be classified as a 'Washer'. These people have an extreme phobia of contamination, and usually wash their hands or sanitize themselves a number of times in a day.

People suffering from this condition usually need to get evaluated, and treated by a professional psychiatrist. The diagnosis of OCD is usually done by a mental health professional, who will ask the patient about his/her daily activities and thoughts they might be having. Although there is no 'cure' for OCD, there are a number of ways to control the condition and to deal with the diagnosis.

In a lighter vein, the Actor also said that he never leaves the house during Holi, because of all the colour and dirt, but jokes that this is a good kind of OCD because he never has to get a manicure.
