It appears to be quite a tumultuous time for US politics, as the country prepares to vote and elect a president come November. The 46th President of the country, Joe Biden -- who has been in power since 2021 -- has decided to drop out of the race, which potentially looked at his re-election as he locked horns with old nemesis and former president Donald Trump. Biden, who is recovering from Covid, made the announcement amid growing concerns surrounding his health and his ability to lead the country, which is a massive superpower.

In his statement, the 81-year-old, who endorsed vice president Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's new presidential nominee, said: "It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

In February this year, the US President underwent an annual physical check-up, conducted by the Physician to the White House, who noted that the president 'feels well' with 'no new concerns'. Biden's health summary, however, did note the following aspects of his well-being:

  1. He had a skin lesion removed from his chest last year, which was found to be basal cell carcinoma. Post removal, no further treatment was required.
  2. Biden had an incorporation of Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) into his sleeping routine. In the past, he had experienced symptoms consistent with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). He underwent sinus and nasal passage surgeries to improve his symptoms.
  3. He also had a 'dental urgency' in June 2023. He underwent an initial root canal procedure.
  4. The president is being currently treated for OSA; non-valvular atrial fibrillation (condition is stable); hyperlipidemia, which is an elevated level of lipids like cholesterol, triglycerides in the blood (condition is stable); gastroesophageal reflux (stable); seasonal allergies; stiffened gait; sensory peripheral neuropathy of feet (stable); routine skin cancer surveillance, along with optometry and dental surveillance.

Biden's physician also mentioned in the report that the president does not use any tobacco products, does not drink alcohol, and works out five days per week.
