Diabetes can be a debilitating disease. With the constant doctor's appointments and large number of medicines, the disease is usually thought of as crippling. But that is not so. We talked to Mr Ashok Jain, founder of Lifespan Clinic about the conditionand how with some minor changes and specialised care, you can live well with diabetes.
Why is the diabetes situation in India so bad?
Most Indians are pre-disposed to diabetes which means that we are genetically inclined to have it. Despite this, we can choose to avoid diabetes. If we adopt an active lifestyle, stop eating meaningless calories, de-stress and get good quality sleep, we can keep the triggers for diabetes under check. Unfortunately, modern lifestyle has changed the way we live. Because of this, we compromise on our quality of sleep, eat convenient fast foods and lead an inactive lifestyle that collectively trigger diabetes. This is precisely the reason why the number of diabetics in India are increasing.
How important is early diagnosis in the treatment of diabetes?
Early diagnosis is extremely essential to treating the patient on time and helps one in avoiding the severe complications that arise out of the disease. Unfortunately, most diabetics do not even realise that they have the disease until the complications become very prominent. Undiagnosed diabetes can lead to eye disorders, heart disease, nerve damage, kidney problems, foot problems ( like diabetic foot), skin and dental diseases.
The key is to not wait for the symptoms to show up. Anyone who has a family history of diabetes, leads an inactive lifestyle, is unable to sleep or is under a large amount of stress must have themselves tested for diabetes periodically.

Is there any particular demographic which is particularly vulnerable to diabetes?
There is no particular age group that is more vulnerable to diabetes, but largely, anyone who is above the age of 35 is at risk of diabetes. Hence, it is very important that one regularly assess his/her risk for diabetes.
Most Indians aren't very concerned about their health until they grow older. Should there be more diabetes awareness?
Yes, diabetes awareness should begin at a young age. I believe that 'today's child shouldn't become tomorrow's diabetics'. Children spend so much of their time on gaming devices, television, and cell phones that their time spent indulging in outdoor activities is drastically cut down. To add to the bad habits the easy accessibility to junk food only adds to the problem. This entire plethora of bad choices has led to the rise in cases of childhood obesity - a factor that is the number one cause for diabetes in the future.
Can diabetics live a normal life?
Yes, Diabetics can lead a normal life. One just need to make some simple lifestyle changes. Small changes like being more active, avoid stress, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and finally getting adequate sleep.
If a diabetic is on medication, they should make sure they take their medication on time and consult their doctor for any alterations to the dosage of their medications. In case one is using home remedies they may try them but under the guidance of a qualified doctor.
How important is exercis for a diabetic?
Exercise or some kind of physical activity is essential for a diabetic. Physical activity is good for the body as excess sugar in the blood is used up by the muscles. A diabetic should try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity every day in order to help thier body use up the required amount of sugar.
Healthy eating can help in managing one's blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy blood pressure, achieve normal cholesterol levels and maintaining a healthy body weight, all prevent or slow down the development of complications in diabetics.
The secret is to stop being inactive! That being said there is no need for excessively strenuous workouts, simple exercises that get your body moving and keep your heart rate up are more than enough. It is important to stay happy and stay fit.
