All you need to know about vaginitis

Vaginitis can be painful! Here’s how to treat it

Women, are you feeling pain down there? Has it become difficult for you to sit, work, walk or do your daily chores with ease? Don’t shy off or ignore the pain. There can be many reasons for the same including vaginitis. “Vaginitis also known as vulvovaginitis, is the inflammation of the vaginal wall due to various causes; common symptoms being pain, itching and discharge, says Dr Alka Kumar, Consultant Gynecologist, S.L.   • Pain in and around the vagina, coupled with tenderness
  • Vagina appears reddish and swollen
  • Itching, burning sensation and pain during urination
  • Discharge from vagina that has a foul smells
  • Infections are more common during menstrual and post intercourse

Below, Dr Alka Kumar lists out few causes:

  • Due to specific vaginal infections such as:
  • Gonococcal infection
  • Trichomoniasis infection
  • Chlamydia infection
  • Candidiasis or Yeast infections
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • These are caused due to inflammation of the vagina and vulva, and most are sexually transmitted
  • Foreign body in the Vagina
  • Malignancy of the lower genital tract
  • Pre-puberty and menopause because of estrogen deficiency

As per Alka Kumar, Sexually active women are more prone to infections. There is an increased discharge seen during menstruation, post-abortion or labor, or following surgeries of the cervix. Physiological increase in discharge seen during pregnancy, during ovulation or the pre-menstrual phase. So, treating it depends on the cause. Therefore, identify the cause. And it can be treated with medication while complicated infections require longer-term treatment. Also, seek timely medical help. Also, mainatin a good personal hygiene.”
