Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is currently taking a short break from work after undergoing vision correction eye surgery on May 6, according to reports. The actor reportedly had the procedure done after filming the Kerala schedule of his next project by director Anees Bazmee. Akshay has not released any health update yet, though so far, sources confirm that the surgery was minor and he is recovering well.
What is vision correction surgery?
According to Dr Bhanu Prakash M, Senior Consultant Cataract, Cornea and Refractive Surgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, "Akshay Kumar likely underwent a procedure called SMILE surgery."
"SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an advanced laser corneal surgical procedure for the correction of many common refractive errors such as myopia (short-sightedness) and astigmatism. Such situations can make it hard for people to see clearly without glasses or contact lenses. This process involves a very accurate laser which reshapes the clear front surface of the eye (cornea) to help focus light. After reshaping, the cornea should function properly to provide clearer vision," the doctor added.
One of the greatest benefits of SMILE surgery is that it doesn't necessitate a substantial flap or cut in the eye, as is done when conducting older LASIK procedures. This generally makes recovery quicker and patients have less dryness or discomfort following surgery. Dr Bhanu Prakash says the laser used during SMILE surgery is very precise which accelerates the healing of the eye.

Many athletes or fitness-conscious individuals opt for vision correction surgery as well, since contact lenses may cause discomfort during sports and activity sessions. Others just don't want the hassle every day of wearing glasses.
Who can undergo SMILE surgery?
According to the doctor, SMILE surgical correction is typically recommended for adults over the age of 18 with stable vision and without serious eye conditions who have healthy eyes and clear corneas. But not everybody is a cinch. The patient should receive a full eye checkup prior to considering surgery. Before patients select any refractive eye surgery, doctors recommend them to discuss their medical history and lifestyle.
Is it safe?
Dr Bhanu Prakash states that the surgery can be "life-saving" for people who want to have a clear and better vision without relying on glasses or contact lenses. But expert consultation will be important to find out if the procedure is suitable to an individual's eyes.
