Throat infectionIt's that time of the year when local health clinics get lined up with patients suffering from throat infections. Although throat infections cannot be prevented completely, if you want to reduce your risk of falling sick, try these effective methods to prevent infections this monsoon:

1. Practice good hygiene: Throat infections can be caused due to viruses, bacteria as well as fungi. These pathogens are present everywhere, including the air you breathe and the food you eat. During the monsoons however, your chances of getting an infection are a lot higher. So be very careful about your personal hygiene. Wash your hands, especially before eating, with an antibacterial soap. Cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing and use tissues to maintain respiratory hygiene.

2. Eat well to boost immunity: What you eat will determine how well your body will fight infections. So, have a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, proteins and fats. 3. Drink plenty of water: Water will not only keep you hydrated, but will also prevent drying out of respiratory linings, making them less susceptible to infection.

4. Avoid direct contact with those suffering from infection: Infections are contagious, so direct contact is the most common way by which a throat infection can be transmitted. Also, be careful while you're out in crowded places. Preferably, cover your mouth with a handkerchief.

5. Keep allergens away: When you're exposed to allergens like smoke, sprays, air fresheners, the throat lining is likely to get irritated. This gives viruses and bacteria an opportunityto cause an infection.

6. Drink warm liquids: A hot cup of tea, soup or even warm water can be extremely helpful if you are suffering from mild sore throat. The heat loosens the clogged mucus and also reduces inflammation of the tissues.
