Selenium is a trace mineral that is required by our body to perform its functions properly and effectively. Deficiency of this mineral in the body is found to affect brain function. Though one can take selenium supplements, selenium obtained naturally is often more than enough to meet our recommended nutritional needs. Adults usually require 55 micrograms of selenium per day, while pregnant women require a slightly higher amount 70 micrograms per day. Here are a few reasons why selenium is essential for your health:
Makes you happy
Selenium is found to boost your brain activity and helps improve your mood. Though there is no research evidence stating direct relation of this mineral as a mood enhancer, low levels have been associated with poorer moods.
Beats stress
Selenium is required for proper activity and functioning of a group of enzymes called glutathione peroxidases. Of the 8 enzymes, five require this mineral to help your body in the detoxification process and protect against oxidative stress.
Cancer prevention
Studies have shown that selenium plays an active role in prevention you from cancer by protecting DNA repair mechanisms. It also helps in fighting against free radicals and inflammatory responses caused due to an infection.
Immune booster
Our body uses selenium to synthesize a compound called 'selenoproteins' that help in protecting DNA from damage caused by free radicals. It also plays a key role in proper functioning of immune cells and prevents the body from falling prey to diseases.
Thyroid regulator
It is found that a selenium-containing enzyme works actively in the transformation of less active thyroid hormone T4 into its more active form T3.
Male fertility
Selenium has the power to spice up your sexual life by boosting male fertility. High levels of this mineral enhances sperm motility, thereby improving fertility in your man.
Here are some foods you should gorge on to get that boost of selenium in your diet:
