World Sight Day 2024: In recent years, ophthalmology has seen remarkable advancements transforming how we treat eye conditions. These developments offer new hope for patients, from innovative surgical techniques to cutting-edge therapies. This article explores six groundbreaking ophthalmic techniques, including plaque brachytherapy for childhood eye cancer, gene therapy for retinal disorders, and advanced lens options for cataract surgery.
These innovations enhance patient care and improve outcomes and quality of life:
One of the recent innovations for treatment in ophthalmology is the use of plaque brachytherapy for saving the eye and saving the life of children with eye cancer that is retinoblastoma. This plaque, indigenously made by the Baba Atomic Research Centre, is a beacon of hope. It is highly effective and significantly more affordable, less than 1/10 the cost of the one made abroad. This means that even our children can avail of this life-saving therapy, offering a ray of hope for their future.
The second innovation is the use of gene therapy in treating a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis pigmentosa is a condition of congenital retinal dystrophy characterized by night blindness. Earlier, we had no treatment for this kind of disease. With the advent of gene therapy, there is a glimmer of hope. In certain patients who test positive for a particular gene, introducing the corrected gene into the retina could limit the amount of the disease, prevent, in some cases, it could avoid progression. This is still experimental and about to be launched. Indian ophthalmologists are also doing a lot of studies on this, paving the way for a brighter future in ophthalmology.
There have been many innovations in the type of lenses we implant after cataract surgery, especially trifocal. Edof being extended, depth of focus, and trifocal lenses significantly decrease the dependence on eyeglasses after the surgery. This is very useful, especially for people still in active work, such as those who are very old and have arthritic problems. Wearing glasses is a problem, so decreasing dependency on glasses can be helpful, too.
Conclusion
Femto laser-assisted cataract surgery is also an innovation that improves safety and precision. It is beneficial in cases with premature or advanced cataracts. This advanced technique significantly decreases the margin of error in cases of heart cataracts or if there's been some injury, trauma, or inflammation in the eye. It increases the safety profile and the outcome of the surgery. This reassures both the patients and the medical professionals about the reliability of these advancements.
