What is the difference between meditation and mindfulness?

Everyone on Instagram seems to be putting out soothing pictures with be mindful captions. Yes, wellness has reached the masses but does that mean everyone knows what is mindfulness? Is it the same as mediation or is it something different? To clear your confusion once and for all, we got in touch with yoga and wellness expert Seema Nayak.

What is meditation?

Meditation is when you intentionally set aside some time to be with yourself. When you make time to do something for yourself it is meditation. For instance, there is music meditation where the whole purpose is to relax and let go. There is exercise mediation where you exercise to clear out your mind. Meditation increases your awareness of the mind and its nature. It brings you in touch with our feelings, innermost desires and expectations. Here is a 10-step meditation guide for beginners.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is just being aware. Mindfulness can be practised both formally and informally. When you are practising it informally, you are simply trying to be more aware of everything you do. The formal process is called mindfulness meditation which could be the real reason for all the confusion. So hear us out. Meditation and mindfulness overlap in mindfulness meditation.
