How to deal with a job loss

Who would not be depressed if they were fired from their job? We're sure some people would be more depressed than the others, obviously. In a recent study conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health, it was found that the impact of job loss is significantly stronger for those with little or no wealth than for wealthier individuals. Also, the impact of job loss due to plant closure was stronger in the US than in Europe. The findings are published online in the International Journal of Epidemiology (IJE).

Though being jobless isn't a very great state to be in but there are ways in which you can help yourself get back to feet albeit with some patience and perseverance. If you lost your job recently follow these tips:

Curtail your expenses: This is common sense. Plan your finances on a day-to-day basis and curb the ones that seems less like a necessity and more like a luxury. If you are able to walk down to reach your destination then don't call for a cab. Give fine dining a miss and opt for home cooked food. This is really going to be light on your wallet and keep you going longer with whatever little savings you have.

Write a neat CV: Though it is easier said, but losing a job doesn't mean the end of the world. It means you need to get back on working with yourself all over again. And the first thing you need is a fresh resume. There are many creative ways to write one. Either do it yourself or hire an expert, make no mistakes here. Remember your CV is going to do all the talking for you when you go out and approach people for jobs.

Scout for a new job: Do this with fervor. Look for a job from all directions. Explore the options on the internet, talk to your contacts in social media, go and meet the other influential people you know, ask your friends if they know anyone or if any company that is hiring. Be honest, straight forward and confident in your approach. Tell everybody you know that you are looking for a job and let the word spread.

Stay away from vices: It is really devastating to lose a job, especially with all those EMIs, monthly rentals and the family expenses that you have to take care of. But drowning yourself in alcohol and smoking like a chimney to keep feeding your ego will only make a bigger hole in your pocket and eat into your savings. Do you need more reasons to stay off vices at this crucial moment?

Keep a positive mindset: Yes this is difficult but without generating a little positivity inside, you won't get any further. To keep yourself motivated, spend some time exercising, even strolls in the morning or evening will do. You would be amazed to see how ideas just flow to you while you are outdoors trying to relax. For the same reasons also practice deep breathing.

Talk to your old colleagues: If you had walked out of your previous workplace with a good reputation try to get connected with them again. If your contributions were noted and added value towards the organization's growth chances are they would like to get you back on board.

Learn to save enough for a rainy day: If you have never saved enough for such consequences, this should be your lesson. Now being jobless learn to give every penny its worth. Stop compulsive shopping, eating, partying and vacationing.

Socialize and make new contacts: Get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. Do not let go of any opportunity. A get-together at a friend's house or networking with your co-workers and clients you met regularly while you were on the job. You never know from where a new opportunity might just land up.

Try a different route: There is always room to start from scratch. If nothing comes your way probably you need to make something work for you. Did you always nurture a passion but never worked on it? Probably you wanted to dabble in photography, open an eatery, start a travel business but always though it's not the right time. You being jobless could be a perfect time to start things anew. Well why not give passion a try?
