Former actor Meghan Markle, who made her comeback on social media by opening an official Instagram account recently, announced in a rather moving and sentimental post that she has lost her beloved dog, a rescue beagle, and is devastated by it. The Duchess of Sussex, who now lives in the US with her husband Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and their two children -- Archie and Lilibet -- posted a video montage celebrating and honouring the memory of her dog, whom she had lovingly named 'Guy'. "In memory of Guy. In 2015, I adopted a beagle from a dog rescue in Canada. He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up and fell in love," Markle began her post, alongside videos and photos of the adorable pupper. "They referred to him as 'the little guy', because he was so small and frail, so I named him 'Guy'. And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for."
Markle, who acted in the hit US drama series 'Suits', had to follow the royal protocol and leave social media after getting married to Harry in 2018. But, ever since they left the UK in 2020, both Harry and Meghan -- former senior members of the British royal family -- have assumed a more unconventional and relaxed attitude towards life. Resuming social media activities is perhaps how they want to stay relevant and connected with the masses.
In her long post, a grieving Markle also wrote that people who followed her on social media back in the day, saw a lot of Guy; she featured him extensively. "He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom .he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort."

The duchess added that unfortunately, her dog "endured a terrible accident shortly before [she] moved to the UK, which had him undergoing surgeries for several months and unable to leave the clinic". "Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr Noel Fitzpatrick said he could do it. [Harry and I] would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end," she wrote.
Talking about her latest Netflix series, Markle wrote: "...because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you'll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love, too. I have cried too many tears to count -- the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they're not there. But they are. And that's okay too."
She concluded her post by thanking her beloved pet: "Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you'll never know."

Grieving the loss of a pet can be a difficult process. It is, therefore, important to allow yourself to feel emotions and acknowledge the pain. Create a memorial, such as a photo album or planting a tree, to honour your pet's memory. Reach out to friends, family, or a pet loss support group for comfort. Take time to reflect on the happy memories with your pet, and consider writing a journal or a letter to process your emotions. Be patient and kind to yourself as you navigate the grieving process, and remember that it is all right to seek professional help, if needed.
