The secret to happiness: Everyone on this planet is in search of one thing: happiness, whose definition may vary from person-to-person. But, on a conceptual level, happiness tends to be elusive. Absolute happiness is like a mirage. And no matter how much one is in pursuit of it, it never truly comes to them. But, according to AiR Atman in Ravi, a happiness ambassador and spiritual leader, in a world dominated by noise and chatter, the one thing that is often underestimated -- but holds profound power -- is 'silence'. Could silence, therefore, be the secret to happiness? What does it do for the body, mind, and the soul?

In A State Of Silence

According to the expert, silence is not simply the absence of sound, but a 'presence in itself'. What does it mean? "It means it is in a silent state that clarity emerges, thoughts settle and emotions find balance," the spiritual leader says. He goes on to explain that in silence, we can reconnect with ourselves and reach a state of stillness and calm -- a state known as 'consciousness', where the 'intellect shines' and we discover our 'power of discrimination'.

"Silence gives us a chance to breathe, reflect and process everything with the intellect and power of discrimination without external distractions," he adds.

The Power Of Silence

The happiness ambassador explains that when one is in a state of silence, they can meditate and become an observer, instead of a doer. "Silence has the power to still the mind... Our mind is our biggest enemy. It bombards up to 50 thoughts in a minute, which sums up to about 50,000 thoughts in a day. All these thoughts are predominantly toxic and negative. When we are in silence and stillness and observe our thoughts, our mental thought rate (MTR) reduces from 50 thoughts in a minute to 40, then 30, then 10, until it becomes one thought at a time."

He paints another analogy and says when we reach a state where thoughts no longer bombard us -- instead, they float like fish -- we reach the state of 'consciousness', 'awareness' or 'mindfulness'. "In this state, we can realise the profound truth about life, death, actions and our purpose of birth. We can attain 'enlightenment'. In this state, we can experience 'eternal bliss' in the 'truth consciousness': SatChitAnanda. This bliss is ever-flowing and unending and also lets us experience peace, calm and tranquillity."

Silence Has Potential

According to the expert, silence does not mean one has to be empty. Silence has immense potential. It is powerful, and by embracing it, we can open ourselves to deeper awareness, better communication, a stronger sense of inner calm and wisdom. We can even discover eternal flow of happiness and bliss.

As mentioned earlier, silence can lead us to our consciousness and help us attain enlightenment, where we realise the truth: we are not the body, mind and ego, but the 'soul', the 'spark of unique life' that is a form of energy -- the life energy.

"One cannot still the soul, but in silence, we can still and kill the mind that is the root cause of all the pain and suffering in the world, and find true happiness, eternal bliss and everlasting joy," the expert concludes.
