There are many reasons to feel you are not in control of your life, that your existence is of no consequence. When such thoughts crop into the mind, a person may start to feel anxious and desperate. They may face mental health issues, including a sense of disillusionment and detachment from life in general. But, is life meant to be lived like this? The answer is, no. Life ought to be experienced in all its colours and seasons, and this is why mental health experts suggest practising certain habits and making some choices that may make you feel like you are in control of your life, and your existence matters. Take, for example, the latest TikTok buzzword 'butterfly effect'. You may have heard of this term numerous times before, but it is now being interpreted as a feel-good habit that can promote mental and emotional well-being.
The phrase 'butterfly effect' comes from the general understanding that when a butterfly -- with a relatively short lifespan -- flaps its wings in one corner of the world, its ripple effects are felt in a completely different part of the world. It is said that the simple habit of the butterfly flapping its wing somewhere can cause tiny and subtle changes in air pressure, potentially influencing larger weather patterns or events in other parts of the world. Simply put, it illustrates the sensitivity and interconnectedness of complex life here on earth.
But, while it is currently trending on the video-sharing app TikTok, the butterfly effect is more than just a buzzword. Its larger consequence makes one believe that akin to the flapping of a little butterfly's wings causing colossal changes elsewhere, a human being may also be able to exert more influence on their life than they may have been led to believe. It is indeed a powerful theory, which can be tested.
In simple terms, it is an action-oriented theory that gives a person some amount of agency over their life. It leads them to believe that even the littlest of action can have a powerful impact. But, it does not mean you obsess over every little thing that you do, allowing yourself to be crippled by anxiety and overthinking. Instead, consider it to be a positively surrendering thing. There is power in your actions, however tiny, and so you must make good use of it. Make decisions mindfully, and not callously.
Butterfly effect can have subtle consequences. So, even if you feel you are not able to meet all your goals yet, know that every little decision of yours can have a positive and monumental outcome. So, continue doing the work that you are doing.

Mental health experts suggest doing some important exercises. Think of this way, every action has an unpredictable outcome. If your job makes you feel stagnant, consider going to that party you have been invited to. Who knows, you may end up striking a conversation with someone who may steer you towards your professional goals.
The idea is to be intentional with every decision that you make, and having the awareness that you hold power in life. Life is not happening to you, you are creating it by making certain choices.
As mentioned earlier, the butterfly effect can be beneficial for mental well-being in several ways:
Empowerment: For one, it suggests that small actions can lead to significant changes, empowering individuals to take control of their lives.
Positive ripple effect: It is important to focus on the positive impact of small actions; it can create a sense of hope and optimism.
Mindfulness: The butterfly effect encourages mindfulness, as small actions in the present moment can have a lasting impact. Break it down into small steps, instead of looking at the larger picture.
Reduce feelings of powerlessness and desperation: You are now able to recognise the potential impact of small actions and feel more connected and less powerless.
