Feeling anxious has become an almost every experience for many people. A packed inbox, an upcoming meetings and unanswered email or even a phone call can sometimes trigger a physical response before we consciously understand what is bothering us. But when does everyday stress become anxiety, and what can we do in the moment to calm the mind and body?

Sangeeta Sharma, Certified Life Coach and Hypnotherapist, shares simple techniques that can help people understand their anxious response and manage it more effectively.

One of her client for instance, would feel nervous when she saw a meeting invite. It was not a big deal; but her shoulders would tighten even before she opened the email. She believed she was anxious about her schedule. But, her body was reacting before she had even finished processing the situation.

Nowadays everyone says they are anxious. They say it when they are late to reply to an email or when they have to make a phone call or when their inbox is full. The word anxious has become so common that it does not really mean anything anymore. Many people Coach Sangeeta Sharma work with have never actually felt what it is like to be anxious. They have just heard the word anxious.

Why your body reacts before your mind?

Coach Sangeeta Sharma says that your body gets confused between a deadline and a real threat. It reacts to both things in the same way. Your chest gets tight. Your breathing gets shorter. Further Coach said that Your mind starts looking for what's wrong usually, after your body has already reacted. It tries to make sense of what happened. You cannot reason with your body. Your body has to move.

Simple breathing technique to calm anxiety

Here are simple breathing techniques to calm anxiety:

Observe your thoughts without reacting

Notice where you feel tight and what you are thinking about. Just let it be. Do not try to fix it. Let it go away like the weather. Just observe your body, thoughts, energy.

Try Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) for anxiety

It's simple, tap the side of your hand just under your collarbone while you say how you are feeling out loud. This can help your body feel better like breathing can.

Journaling can help manage anxious thoughts

Write down something you are thinking about. Half of the problems are solved when they are on paper. Either way it will look smaller on paper than it did in your head.

Small habits can make a big difference

These may sound small, but they have a gig impact. Ask yourself what you can really do about the situation. Do that thing. Let everything else go. The coach said, "My client never said what she thought would happen if she stopped getting nervous. She did not need to. It was never really about the meeting invite; it was about anxiety itself."
