I am a 20-year-old college student and I have wavy hair naturally, which is not easy to manage and I don't like the way it looks. I find it better and more manageable when it is straightened. So, straighten my hair almost every day. Will doing this damage my hair?
Straightening your hair every day can cause a lot of problems. It can lead to breakage, dullness and dryness. Says Dr Apoorva Shah, 'When you straighten your hair, tremendous heat is produced by the straightener. This converts the protein cystine (of which the hair is composed) to cysteine and in the process, some amount of cystic acid is generated. This process results in 20% of the hair getting destroyed.'
If you still want to straighten your hair regularly, make sure you take precautions like using a heat protector spray all over your hair before you start. Straightening your hair when it is wet may lead to damage because there will be a sudden temperature change. Make sure that you are not over straightening it, once you are done straightening your hair, do it again only after a nice hair wash. Keep in mind that the heat setting is on low so that the damage is minimum. And if you wish to get rid of your waves, you can always opt for a permanent smoothening, keratin or rebonding hair treatment.
