As enticing as the deals at flea markets or online stores for discounted perfumes may sound, think before you buy one. Is wasting money on a fake perfume better than just adding some more to it and buying a real one? A real one will last you long and is worth the investment. But with so many options available, how does one spot a fake from a real one. Rohit Kumar Agarwal, founder and owner, shares with us tips to identify a fake perfume from an authentic one.

  1. Real perfumes have smooth bottle containers while imitation bottles are often a bit rough and are usually poorly made, sometimes constructed with plastic. Quality perfume bottles have tight fitting caps that are spill-proof. Be aware that designer perfume labels treat the bottle as part of the perfume experience, so the bottle should be of a superior quality. The bottle will have a smooth surface unlike fake ones that have rough or unfinished edges.
  2. The seams of packaging are flawless and very little plastic or adhesive is used in packing those. The box is also made of better quality material. You can also check the manufacturer s website to match the description of notes, ingredients and packaging matches. Shake the sealed box. The packaging of a real perfume won t allow the bottle or any of the inner material to move. If you find material moving inside, that s a red flag.
  3. The scent of authentic perfumes is complex and intricately constructed. Though it is difficult to measure, you will be able to tell the difference if you have smelled an original perfume before, regardless of the brand.
  4. Authentic perfumes are constructed from three layers of scents, the top, middle and base notes. The top note is the first impression which then transitions to the middle note when it comes in contact with the skin and the base note can be experienced when the perfume is absorbed in the skin. Fake perfumes retain the same smell from application to absorption. You might even find an off smell with an hour of applying it. Read: 5 easy hacks to make your perfume last longer.
  5. Authentic perfumes derive their scents from both natural and synthetic products. Cheap and fake perfume rely on synthetic products only which eventually gives you an unnatural fragrance. The fragrance lacks that complexity and fails to refresh you or stay for long.
  6. A fake perfume will initially smell similar but its effectiveness dies down within an hour or less and needs reapplication. If your perfume fragrance lasts on your clothes or body for more than 4-5 hours and still smells similar, then it s a real one. Try making your own fragrance at home, here is how.
  7. Bottles of real perfumes once opened, retain their fragrance for up to 8 months. Citrus fragrances start deteriorating in around 6 months but floral and other fragrances can last as long as 18 months. Fake perfume bottles once opened may lose their scent in a few weeks or couple of months.
  8. Once you are satisfied with the packaging and appearance of the perfume, go ahead with testing. Counterfeit or fake perfumes can cause allergic reactions and leave rashes on your skin. So do not try every perfume without checking if it is authentic. Wait for a few hours to see how the perfume smells and how the different notes exhibit themselves. If you are not convinced that the description of scents and actual fragrance is similar, avoid buying it. Be watchful of the perfumes you use. Here s what our experts have to say.
