Skin and hair concerns are a constant worry in many people's lives. We speak to renowned cosmetologist Dr Dinyar Workingboxwalla who has celebrity clients like Lara Dutta and Jacqueline Fernandez and is the author of 'Beauty Unleashed: A Comprehensive Guide To Getting Perfect Skin And Hair' about his methods and tips for better skin and hair care.
What are the most common beauty problems that Indians face these days and what solutions do you suggest?
The most common skin problems that I come across these days are pigmentation, ageing and acne. Due to sun exposure and humidity, the skin gets pigmented, tanned, becomes prone to acne and also ages faster. I always suggest my clients to protect their skin from the sun not just sunscreen, but shield themselves with a physical barrier like an umbrella, a scarf, hat, sunglass, etc when going out. People need to understand that even if it isn't sunny and even if they are at home, they need to apply sunscreen as UVA rays can penetrate the skin even when it is cloudy. They are present all year round and cause damage to our skin. It is also essential to cleanse your skin regularly as dirt can clog pores and result in pimples. So wash your face every time you come from outside.
I don't recommend applying any serums to your hair
Stay away from junk food it shows on your skin
Instead of juices, have veggies and fruits for fibre
Never sleep with your make-up on. Always remove it no matter how exhausted you are
Don't stress too much and be happy it reflects on your skin and hair
Today people want quick solutions to their problems and due to their hectic lifestyles, there isn't much time left for themselves. What should they do?
I do not believe in quick fixes. I suggest all my clients to take out time for their skin. 15 minutes in the morning and night are enough to keep your skin intact. These days, the stress levels are high and people tend to forget to care for their skin and hair. This results in problems and instead of healing it, they hide it behind layers of make-up. I am a believer of holistic treatment and that is what I recommend. Spare time for yourself without making excuses simple deep breaths in the morning also go a long way in making your skin healthy. Stop using wrong products which harm your skin than healing it. Love your hair and skin and care for them to keep them healthy.
How important are one's diet and fitness levels to ensure they have good hair and skin?
Hair, skin and health go hand-in-hand. If your health is down, you will see it on your face. At the same time, once you switch to a healthy diet, your skin will glow, it will look fresher and younger, your hair will have shine and be stronger. Eating right and exercising are prime factors in determining the health of your skin and hair. As you age, your body will need more care and if you feed it unhealthy food, no amount of products can rectify the damage.
