Since the olden days, "Ubtan" has been made at home for skin care. In fact, it has become a part of wedding rituals, when haldi and Ubtan are applied on the bride. Ubtan consisted of wheat bran (choker), gram flour, yogurt or cream of milk (malai) and a pinch of turmeric. All these were mixed together and applied on the body, along with oil. It was then washed off after 20 to 30 minutes, while bathing. It helped to cleanse the skin, leaving it smooth and bright.

Benefits of Ubtan

Ubtan makes your skin soft and gives it that elusive glow.

  • It is a traditional method of removing dead skin cells, softening the skin and enhancing skin beauty.
  • When it is washed off with water during the bath, it helps to remove dead skin cells, making the skin soft and smooth.
  • It also helps to remove tan and brighten the skin, producing an even colour tone.

Actually, the body should first be massaged with sesame seed (til) oil. Did you know that sesame seed (til) oil has sun-protective properties and counteracts sun-damage? After the oil massage, "ubtan" may be applied and then washed off after half an hour, while bathing. The washing off and scrubbing away of the ingredients, leaves the skin clean, bright and glowing, with a translucent quality. Exfoliation or removal of dead cells is an important treatment for body and face, as it helps in improving skin texture, accelerating the cell renewal process, minimizing dark patches and blemishes, and also producing an even colour tone. It is a powerful cleansing procedure too and keeps the pores free of hardened oil.

Make your own Ubtan

You can try out making "Ubtan" or scrubs with these simple kitchen ingredients like like almond meal (ground almonds), oats, rice flour, wheat bran (choker), sesame seeds (til), as well as cucumber or pumpkin seeds. Orange and lemon peels can be dried and powdered and added to scrubs. Mix with a liquid ingredient like water, rose water, curd or milk.

Ubtan for the face

Ubtan can also be applied on the face. Here is a facial ubtan for all skin types.

  • Take one teaspoon ground dry orange and lemon peels, one teaspoon oats and one teaspoon ground almonds (almond meal). Add one teaspoon each of honey and yogurt. Apply on the skin and rub gently with circular movements. Then wash off with water.
  • Egg white can also be added to this face pack.
  • Orange and lemon peels should be dried thoroughly in the sun and kept in a tightly closed container.

Oats for dry skin

Oats works wonders on oily, blackhead prone skin.

  • Mix oats with egg white and apply on the skin.
  • When it is dry, dampen with water and gently scrub it off the skin.
  • The face should be rinsed off with water.
  • Oats added to curd can also be applied on the face if you do not wish to use egg, washing it off when it is dry.

Lemon juice and sugar

Lemon juice and sugar make a good scrub. Try it on the hands.

  • Mix the sugar to the lemon juice just before scrubbing.
  • Rub gently on the skin and wash off with water.

A nourishing scrub

Here is a recipe for a nourishing scrub.

  • Grind one tablespoon almonds and mix one tablespoon honey and egg white.
  • Apply on face and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Dampen with milk or water and gently scrub on the face.

Cleanse your skin with papaya

Ripe papaya has a cleansing action and contains an enzyme called papain, which helps to remove dead skin cells and brighten the skin.

  • Add oats and curd to papaya.
  • Apply on the face and rub gently on the skin, washing off with water.

Green tea for your skin

Make a powder of green tea leaves and mix it with curd and a little aloe vera gel. Apply on the face and neck and leave on for a few minutes. Rub gently and wash off with water.
