Do you face a lot of struggle trying to maintain the length of your hair? You just go to a salon asking for a trim and get back home with quite a length chopped off? Or you have damaged ends, and you have to cut your strands off every time before you even think of growing them? We have all been there. But if you do not want to go for a trim, there is this one method called hair dusting where you can get rid of the split ends without losing the precious length of your hair. Hair and beauty expert Janet Fernandez tells you how it is done.

Dusting is a hair care practice that involves slicing off the damaged tips of your strands. You need to only cut less than a quarter inch of hair from the ends. It is simply an alternative to trimming where you end up cutting the large amount on a frequent basis. The technique is quite similar to velaterapia where an open flame is used to remove split ends. When you are dusting, you need to look for uneven and thinning parts of the hair. With dusting, you will have fewer split ends and less overall damage. The only downside of dusting is that it is a time-consuming process. You can also try these natural remedies for split ends.

Dusting can be done every few weeks at home so that you can lessen the need for trims. To dust your hair at home,

  • Divide your hair into equal portions and clip them.
  • Then unclip one of the sections and then examine your hair.
  • Do not trim more than 1/4th inch from the ends of your hair. Anything more than that will not be considered dusting but a haircut.
  • Repeat the steps until you have dusted all the sections of your hair. Here's how often you should get a haircut.
