beauty tips for teensStepping into your teens? Be prepared to have a lot of physical changes in your body. And one of them which probably every teenager goes through is common skin problems such as pimples, blackheads, oily skin, etc. This calls for a good skincare regimen which will help keep these problems under control. Dr Geetanjali Shetty, a consulting dermatologist and cosmetologist from Mumbai, shares some tips to keep common skin troubles in teenage years away.

Stop using soaps

The first mistake that many teenagers make when it comes to skincare is using soap to wash their face. But what they don't realise is that after hitting puberty, the skin undergoes hormonal changes. Says Dr Geetanjali, 'After puberty, facial skin becomes more prone to acne. Therefore, teenagers need to modify their face cleansing routine. Body soap is harsh on facial skin as it affects its pH balance. It strips the skin of its natural oils and makes it feel tight and dry. Instead, use a face wash or cleanser that is gentler and formulated for teenagers.'

Cleanse your skin regularly

Cleansing your skin on a daily basis is probably the best way to keep skin problems during these years at bay. Though most teenagers will have problems like overactive sebaceous glands secreting oil, you will find many who still manage to have better skin than others. A good skin regimen can help you keep these problems to a minimum. Dr Geetanjali advises using cold or tepid water to wash one's face. This is because cold water helps in tightening pores and reduces the secretion of oil. Hot water on the other hand, will rob the skin of its natural moisture. You can even carry a small bottle of face wash in your bag especially during the summer months to keep your skin free of dirt, oil and grime.

Don't pop those pimples

You will often find a pimple on your face before you have to attend an important event. But remember, it is not the end of the world. Your hormones are changing and acne breakouts are common, you aren't alone. But many teenagers start popping those pimples without understanding the ill-effects it has on their skin. 'Popping pimples can damage your skin and leave marks and scars. You should instead follow an effective and regular face cleansing regimen. Wash your face at least twice a day. You can even buy special cleanser which target acne-causing germs,' says Dr Geetanjali.

Manage oily skin

Teenagers usually have an oily skin which shines. In order to keep it under control, it is important to wash your face with a foaming cleanser twice a day. You can also use blotting paper which will soak up the excess oil. Another important thing is to avoid using heavy creams on the face as it will make it greasier. Use light moisturisers and sunscreens and remember to take off any make-up before you go to bed using a good make-up remover.
