As babies we have soft, pink lips but as we grow up, the colour often changes to a darker shade due to several habits including smoking, excessive use of lipstick, etc. But there is one more thing that can darken your lips and it is something that most of us do quite often. It is licking your lips.
Why is it bad?
According to dermatologist Dr Kiran Lohia, people who lick their lips not only have dark lips but the area around their mouth is also darkened due to this detrimental habit. This is because our lips do not have any protective layer on them like our skin and are thinner than the skin on our face. When we lick our lips, they get irritated and result in inflammation and darkening. Don t forget, our saliva contains enzymes that break down food and when it is on our lips, it can irritate the skin.
