Skin whitening product manufacturers know that many Indians are fascinated by fair skin and our intolerance towards dark skin. Well-m

eaning relatives and friends in India are known to offer unsolicited advice to dark-skinned people. Today, let's get one thing clear, dark-skinned people do not like being treated as if they have an incurable condition. Unless you want to be insensitive, do not say these things to dark-skinned people. And if you are at the receiving end of an Indian aunty or uncle's 'well-meaning jibe', here are some comebacks for you-

  1. Pity you can't wear dark colours. Nobody is stopping you from wearing white, pink or yellow, so why can't I wear brown, blue or black? Besides, a little black dress will look equally flattering on me even with my dark skin.
  2. You should scrub yourself more often. So here's the thing, the colour of the skin comes from melanin (natural pigment in the skin), which sadly cannot be scrubbed off with a loofah. So till the time skin scientists invent something to weed out melanin from the skin, let's practice a little tolerance and acceptance.
  3. Isn't it terrible you can't wear dark make-up and red lipstick! Beyonce, Naomi Campbell, Keisha Bushanan and Tenika Davis tell me otherwise.
  4. My grandmom knew someone who was as dark as you... See I told you, I am not limited edition! There are many people with my skin colour. Sadly, there are more people with your mentality.
  5. You are pretty for your colour! After you have taken off your colour-selective glasses, you might also notice that I am a nice person to be friends with.
  6. Finding a partner will be difficult for you. Why? Have you infected the whole world with your insensitivity?
  7. You should bleach your skin. Let's make it a 'switch skin' day, you get a tan, I'll bleach my skin. Clearly, being comfortable in your skin is overrated!
  8. Bright, pastel colours will not suit you. A sucky attitude doesn't suit you either.
  9. You are dark, but at least you have nice hair. You are a nincompoop, at least you have two thumbs.
  10. How come your parents are fair but you are not? Does sensitivity-deficiency run in your family?

After you are done planting trees, you can make the world an even better place by adopting acceptance and tolerance. So do away with all the whitening creams, trashy attitudes and spread the love!
