If your skin is sensitive, you will know how easy it is to get it irritated. Trying a new fragrance based product or a new moisturiser can be completely out of question. Certain products can inflame sensitive skin types so skin specialist Dr Kanika Thakur advices you to avoid these products.
Sulphate shampoo and conditioner
Sulphate may not be the right choice for sensitive skin types. Made of sulphur containing mineral salts and strong detergent ingredients, sulphate shampoos and conditioners are known to cause chronic dryness and itchiness everywhere from the face to the body. Check your labels for sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate. Here are 5 reasons your skin is suddenly so sensitive.
Fragranced body lotions and creams
The word fragrance hides many ingredients that can irritate your skin. So if your skin is sensitive, you are more prone to get a reaction from these ingredients. Pick fragrance-free products or choose formulations that add it to natural ingredients like natural oils. It can always be a good idea to first do a patch test before you use the products on your skin.
Chemical sunscreens
Chemical sunscreens can cause irritation in sensitive skin types. Chemical sunscreens typically contain ingredients oxybenzone, homosalate, octisalate and avobenzone which can irritate your skin. Be sure to check the labels closely and stick to sunscreen containing only two ingredients titanium oxide and zinc oxide.
Face scrubs
Scrubs can be too harsh for sensitive skin no matter how gentle the beads are. Dry brushes and loofahs can also irritate your skin. Over exfoliation can also result in acne and flaky skin. If you must scrub your face, look for gentle chemical exfoliants like lactic acid to remove dead cells. Here's a guide for selecting the best soap for your sensitive skin type.
Skincare products containing alcohol
Skincare products containing alcohol can rip the moisture out of your skin and lead to itchiness and irritation. If your skin is sensitive, going alcohol-free can be your safest bet.
