Beauty myths 4

Ever heard your mom, friend, relative or beautician giving you beauty advice that didn't seem right? From not applying moisturizer if you have oily skin to skipping sunscreen if it's not sunny - you've heard them all. Let us bust a few of those myths for you:

Myth: If you pluck a grey hair, there will be ten more in its place.

Truth: NO! For every hair pulled out, only one can take its place. If you pull one plant out with its roots, will ten more grow in its place?

Myth: If you shave your arms and legs instead of waxing, they will grow coarse.

Truth: The truth is that shaving makes the hair grow neither coarse nor soft. It only removes the hair like any other method that you use. The only reason it might 'appear' coarse is that the ends of the hair once shaved are blunt and feel coarse when touched.

Myth: Split ends can be repaired.

Truth: Not really. Once the hair splits, you cannot do anything to 'glue' it back together. The only option is to get your hair trimmed.

Myth: If you have acne, you should wash your face often and vigorously.

Truth: Absolutely not! Washing an acne-ridden face often and vigorously would only lead to further spread of the infection leading to even more acne.

Myth: If it is not sunny outside, you can skip sunscreen.

Truth: The sun being visible or not isn't a factor to decide your sunscreen use. In fact, it is necessary to wear sunscreen to protect yourself from UV rays present in the atmosphere throughout the year, irrespective of whether it is sunny or not.

Myth: If your hair is greasy, you shouldn't use conditioner.

Truth: No! You should use conditioner for all kinds of hair. It makes your hair more manageable. Just make sure that you apply it only on the hair and not on the scalp.

Myth: If you want your hair to grow longer, trim it every 2 months.

Truth: No, the rate of hair growth cannot be altered by trimming it. If you have split ends, trimming your hair can only make it look better.

Myth: If you have oily skin, you can skip the moisturizer.

Truth: No. You need moisturizer for all skin types. If you deprive your skin of moisture, your oil glands overproduce oil to compensate, making your skin more acne-prone. Myth: Got white spots on nails? You have calcium deficiency!

Truth: Those white spots on your nails are just deposits of a substance known as cysteine. They might be intact in the fat cells that are pushed up from the soft area below your cuticle. It has no relation whatsoever to any kind of nutritional deficiency.

Myth: You will lose your cellulite, if you lose weight.

Truth: Cellulite is a skin problem, not a fat problem. Losing fat can only smoothen some of your cellulite dimples, but it won't eliminate it altogether.
