Acne is a nightmare for every girl. If like me, you believed that acne is caused due to excess toxins in the body and can be treated by undergoing facial or detox, then you are WRONG! According to Dr Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant Dermatologist, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, it is a myth that acne is a result of toxins. The belief that acne can be treated by purifying the blood or a detoxification process is just not right. Here's why you frequently get acne on the chin and T-zone.

Acne is caused due to hormonal changes that mainly occur during puberty mainly during 11-15 years of age. However, this doesn t mean that adults do not get acne. Even a 30-year-old or 40-year-old can get acne for the first time. It is due to various hormonal changes that occur in the body as the person ages. It can be due to hormonal changes in the ovaries or conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. Acne caused due to this is more severe than the ones we get in teenage or during puberty.

Contrary to popular belief, thyroid problems or stress do not cause acne but stress can aggravate acne. However, the severity of acne can vary from person to person -- those who have normal to dry skin have less acne as compared to those with oily skin. If hormones are the main culprit then going for a detox treatment or a beauty treatment like facial is a sheer waste of money. And as a dermatologist, she does not recommend undergoing detoxification to treat acne. Here are common myths about facial acne busted!
