Confused about what skin care to do before or during workout? Celebrity dermatologist Dr Rashmishettyra clears it all in a recent video posted on Instagram.

No moisturiser, no cream, no serum, and definitely no make-up before and during workout. Leave all the skin care for AFTER your workout she says.

She explains, "While working out there is a lot of blood flowing, pores opening, your skin is sweating - getting rid of the toxins. Allow it to do that instead of clogging it with creams."

When you're working out, you should let your skin breathe. But if you are working out outdoors or at a gym with big windows, the skin expert advises to apply water-based sunscreen. "Right after working out, make sure you properly wash your face and then apply a light moisturiser with great active ingredients because that is when your skin is most receptive," she adds.

Always wash your face post-workout

Washing your face post-workout is a must whether you do or don't wear makeup to the gym. It helps remove bacteria and sweat residue accumulated during your workout and cool down the skin to prevent breaking of blood vessels.

Carry some toner pads in your gym bag

Those with oily skin can use toning pads that contain active ingredients like salicylic acid or glycolic acid to get rid of excess dirt and oil after workout, say skin experts. Toning pads can be good for wiping off that layer of sweat on the front and back of the neck and chest as well.

Clean gym towels after every use

Many gyms provide towels, but you don't know exactly when and how it was cleaned or what detergent they use. Your skin could have an allergic reaction if you're not used to the detergent used. So, it is best to bring your own and make sure you clean them after every use. Also, avoid using fluffier and thicker towels as the bacteria can hold on to them even through a wash cycle.

Don't touch your face when you're at the gym

Gyms are full of germs and other people's sweat. Now, you know the reasons why you should not touch your face when you're at the gym. When you finish your workout, use toner pads to wipe your face down. If you have longer hair, keep it pulled back during a workout to keep oils and hair products away from your face.
