Every chemical product you use has potential side effects, and the hair spray is no different. Of course, a hairspray works wonders in keeping your stylish hairdo in place and gives you that finished look which makes all the difference, but you may not want to make it a part of your daily hair care regimen. Well-known cosmetologist and makeup artist, Nandita Das tells you why.

  • Hair sprays contain a group of active ingredients like a few polymers and solvents. What s concerning about these ingredients is that they can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. They can cause allergic reactions like sneezing, red eyes, rashes and even itchiness.
  • Frequent use of hair spray can lead to difficulty in breathing. Some of the other side effects also include low blood pressure and lung diseases. Many hair sprays contain the compound propylene glycol, which when inhaled on a regular basis can be poisonous and even lead to cancer. Instead, use these natural hair tonics for longer, stronger and lustrous hair. This amazing natural hair serum could be the end of frizzy hair.
  • If you do not wash away the hairspray well, your hair may become dry and brittle. Regular use of hairspray also increases the number of split ends.

Tips to use hairspray the right way

  • Always ensure that you hold the can of the hair spray at least 12 inches away from your hair. Move the hair spray across your hair instead of focusing on one point. Most hair sprays have instructions on how long should you spray your hair. However, if you feel that your hair has begun to harden, stop spraying.
  • Always apply hair spray in a well-ventilated room so that there are lesser chances of inhaling it.
  • Hairsprays contain alcohol that can dry out your scalp. So do not spray the product directly on your scalp.
  • Hair sprays are highly inflammable so do not use it near open flames.
  • Store the spray in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and wash your hands immediately after use. If you are buying a haircare product, here's how you can make the right choice.
