Many women book an appointment for a facial every month at their favourite salon and don t mind shelling out at least Rs 1,000 for an entire hour of getting their skin pampered. Here s how to select the right facial. With a good beautician, a facial can be a relaxing and soothing treatment and you can come out feeling fresh and pretty. However, you need to re-evaluate if you should get expensive facials done or not. Despite how popular it has become to go for facials, dermatologists warn that they are actually doing more harm than good for your skin.
Dr Smriti Naswa Singh, Consultant Dermatologist at Mumbai s Fortis Hospital says, It is important for people to remember that facials done in salons should be seen as nothing but a monthly pampering session. Don t expect that they will help in improving your skin or make you look fairer or younger. Facials are nothing but a gimmick.
She adds that instead of improving your skin, it can actually cause more problems for you especially if you make the mistake of getting it done more than once a month. Most beauticians are completely unaware about how to massage your face and end up scrubbing your skin with harsh and strong movements that can cause and also aggravate skin pigmentation or dark spots, adds Dr Naswa. These are the shocking causes of skin pigmentation.
Dermatologists also say that people notice some improvement in their skin that only last for one or two days because facials only help in moisturising your skin and nothing else. Dr Naswa says that as far as possible, you should restrict any facial activities or the amount of pressure applied to your face. Many beauticians don t know how to massage the face correctly and that it should be done from down to top with less pressure. Other than that, the method used by salons to for blackhead removal is completely wrong. By aggressively trying to pluck it out, it will make the bacteria spread and worsen your blackheads and acne problem, she says.
I have had many patients coming to my clinic with abrasions and bruises on their faces because their facial wasn t done properly. Also, some salons don t use sterile equipments, adds Dr Naswa. Here s what beauty experts have to say about how often you should get a facial done.
Dr Shuba Dharmana, a Bangalore-based dermatologist says she has treated many patients who suffered from acne breakouts all over their face and also pre-mature skin ageing after going for facials. 'Many times, heavy creams are used during facials which only clog the pores and cause the skin to breakout. This is because the beautician doesn't bother to check her client's skin condition first. Also, you could also have an allergic reaction to some creams if you have sensitive skin. Other than that, due to wrong massaging techniques, it can cause premature skin ageing,' she says.
