A steam room can be the place to relax and reduce stress. Regular steam baths can work wonders for your beauty, ease muscle tension, uplift your mood and even clear your sinuses. However, with the benefits come precautions and rules to follow before, during and after entering a steam room. Here are some tips from Daljeet Hanjrah, spa expert at Amantra Spa, New Delhi.

Before steam

Do not eat before a steam: You should eat your food at least one hour before you go to the steam room. You can experience uncomfortable cramping if you eat right before you go to the steaming room.

Drink a lot of water: Your body temperature rises more than regular in a steam room making you sweat a lot. So be sure to drink a lot of water before a steam bath to keep yourself hydrated.

Take a shower: Take a shower first as it will help remove dirt and body odour and maintain the steam room pleasant for you and other visitors.

During steam

Dress lightly: The temperature in the steam room ranges anywhere between 115 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit, and the room is filled with a constant mist. Wearing light clothes will prevent you from overheating and will keep your clothes from clinging to your body. You can consider going nude or in a swimsuit.

Stay protected: Just be sure to sit on a towel and wear shower shoes in a steam room. The moist, wet tile can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria so stay protected.

Limit your time in the steam room: Limit your time to 15 to 20 minutes in the steam room. If you feel too hot or uncomfortable, step out for a moment from the steam room or end the session altogether. For multiple sessions, take a break between steam by using cold air to lower your body temperature.

After steam

Take a cold shower: After leaving the steam room, finish off with a cold shower. Don t use ice cold water as it can shock your system and make you shiver. Find out if it is necessary to go for a steam bath after a workout.

Precautions:

  • The high temperature of the room can have potential side effects so make sure you do not enter the chamber if your body temperature is already elevated due to climate or exercise.
  • Consult a doctor before going into a steam room if you have a respiratory disease, high or low blood pressure and diabetes. Also, avoid it altogether if you are pregnant.
