There are many skincare products that do wonders for your skin texture and type. They are available in the market to address your specific concerns, or they can be prepared at home with ingredients found in the kitchen. Lately, many 'gharelu nuskhe' have gained popularity. But, are all of them effective? There are some DIY ingredients that are understood to be harmful for the overall health of the skin. Highlighting some of them, dermatologist Dr (Major) Gurveen Waraich took to Instagram and talked about the pros and cons of using certain ingredients on the face, mainly rice in varied forms, lemon, tomato and olive oil. Read on.

Rice

According to the dermatologist, using rice -- either as a rice flour mask, fermented rice water, or just plain rice water -- is a popular skincare DIY with Asian roots. It is commonly practised in countries like Japan, Korea and India. Approving this ingredient, Dr Gurveen said rice has ferulic acid, a super antioxidant. It is also rich in phytic acid and alpha-hydroxy acid that help with lightening and brightening the skin. Since rice has starch, it controls the production of oil and reduces the prominence or pores.

Lemon

The doctor warned that this ingredient must be avoided. While it is popular in DIY, it is a big no-no for skin. "Lemon is highly acidic with pH2 that could damage your skin barrier forever, making it prone to rashes, redness and sensitivity," she said.

Tomato

Tomatoes are also acidic with pH4, said the expert in her video. She added that pH4 is quite close to the skin's pH. It can help with removing tan from the face, with exfoliation, and with brightening. It can help one achieve whatever they are trying to achieve with lemon, but without lemon's 'damaging' properties.

Olive oil

The dermatologist is not a big fan of this DIY ingredient, because it is 'not the ideal choice of oil for Indian skin and hair'. "Olive oil is the yummiest food for your dandruff, yeast or fungus and can increase [them] exponentially. Similarly, when applied on skin, it can cause fungal acne. So, [I give it] a big thumbs down."
