You follow your regular skincare regime cleansing, toning, moisturising so what is making your skin feel so red and sensitive? There are many other things you do that could be the culprit. Dermatologist Dr Sejal Shah tells you what is making your skin sensitive.
1. You use too much retinol: Retinol used frequently to combat dark lines and wrinkles especially in the first four weeks of treatment can lead to stinging, burning and sensitivity. So if you experience burning and stinging it is best that you avoid using it. You could try these home remedies for sensitive skin.
2. You scrub your face way too much: Scrubbing can definitely bring a glow to your skin but sometimes even a little exfoliation can go a long way. Overdoing scrubbing can lead to cracks in the outer layer of the skin which in turn can cause inflammation and sensitivity. Just use a soft, circular motion to exfoliate your skin.
3. You use too many products: Using more than one anti-ageing cosmetic product can make your skin extremely sensitive. Ingredients like glycolic acid and salicylic acid are common offenders. So think twice before you add a new product to your skin care routine.
4. You skip using the moisturiser: Moisturisers and lotions prevent dry and irritated skin and the best time to use them is right after you step out of the shower. The hot water you use to take a shower can strip the oil from your skin making it sensitive to the environment. Also, avoid these beauty products if you have sensitive skin.
5. You use the wrong cleanser: Some cleansers have an alkaline pH that can be harsh on your skin. They can strip off the natural oils and leave it feeling dry and irritated. So check the label for preservatives and fragrances that can disrupt the barrier of the skin.
