5 potentially harmful ingredients in your make-up products you should be wary of

Check for these ingredients in your make-up products before making a purchase.

Most of us use make-up and beauty products without giving a second thought. What we don't pay attention to while buying the products are the potentially harmful ingredients present in them. While they may make you look and feel good, cosmetologist,Nandita Das suggests not to buy products which contain these ingredients.

1. Sulfates

Sulfates are what that causes your body soaps, cleansers and shampoo to foam up. However, in most cases sulphates have been known to cause skin irritation. Avoid buying products that contain sodium laurel sulphate.

2. Parabens

Parabens are preservatives that are found in most cosmetic products. Parabens are added to inhibit the growth of bacteria or mold. The bad news about parabens is that they may cause many skin rashes and irritation. To find out if your cosmetic product contains paraben look for methylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben. 3. Phthalates

Phthalates are added in fragrances, cosmetic products and nail polish to make them soft and durable. However, they are also linked to asthma and neurodevelopmental problems in newborns.

4. Mineral oil

Derived from petroleum, the mineral oil present in most cosmetic products can lead to breakouts. Mineral oil easily clogs skin pores that lead to acne and blackheads. So avoid purchasing products that contain paraffin oil and liquid petroleum. Mineral oil also leads to burning, redness and stinging. Also don't purchase products that contain these 7 harmful chemicals.

5. Coal tar

Coal tar is a colorant added in cosmetics such as eyeliners and blushers. Some companies also add it to anti-dandruff shampoos. Don t buy products that contain coal tar as it may trigger a headache, nausea and vomiting.
