LED face masks have been the talk of the town with claims to improve acne and rosacea. But, does it really work? According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) represent an emerging modality to alter skin biology and change the paradigm of managing skin conditions.
The US health agencies claim that acne vulgaris, herpes simplex and zoster and acute wound healing received a grade of recommendation B. However, dermatologists are divided over whether the at-home mask can deliver as it claims, and advertisements over unauthorized claims that the LED face mask can improve acne and rosacea are banned in the United Kingdom.
This advanced skin repair technology may have a positive impact on your face, but authorities suggest that the device must be registered under the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to make medical claims about skin conditions such as acne and rosacea.
Any devices registered under the UK MHRA can be searched on the Public Access Registration Database (PARD), but the agency claims that as of now, "there are currently no LED face masks being registered."
A ban on the LED face mask advertisement in the UK came after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) used an AI to analyse ads that may break the rules. Izzy Dharmasiri at the ASA told the media, "Ads can have an influence on what people buy...so it is important that advertisers don't blur the line between cosmetic benefits and medicinal claims." Seeking genuine solutions to medical problems, while protecting vulnerable people, she further added, "Advertisers need to have evidence to back up any claims they make in their ads".
Dermatologists have previously told a leading media outlet that there is no such evidence or clinical trials to know the benefits of an at-home LED face mask.
An advertisement appeared on a beauty tech brand, showing a before and after of a woman's forehead with and without acne, writing, "By week three, my acne had disappeared", is an instance a UK media outlet presented to argue.
The advertisement stated, "Our most advanced LED mask for deeper skin renewal...treats acne...83% improvement in acne lesions in four weeks." However, contracting the claims, the ASA stated, "No medical claims could be made for the product, whether or not such claims appeared in customer testimonials."
Many social media ads, including those of Luyors Retail Inc, which wrote, "It helps tackle everything from acne...with clinical precision," were banned. Additionally, other advertisements from the Beautaholics website for a RejuvaLux mask that stated, "This mask provides targeted solutions for...acne...rosacea," were also banned in the UK.
