Pregnancy is a beautiful phase of your life. You have a natural glow on your face, your hair and nails get stronger and grow more quickly and your body experiences several changes. But many women prefer to continue with their regular beauty routines even during pregnancy. While it is a good idea to take care of yourself and your beauty, there are certain treatments which you should avoid for your developing baby's sake. Dr Mary Rosser, an MD, lists out common beauty mistakes pregnant should avoid making.
Pregnant women shouldn't dye their hair because the product is absorbed into the skin and can be toxic to the baby. Generally speaking, dyes are safe but try to be completely natural during pregnancy. If you must colour your hair, do so after the first trimester and in a well-ventilated space. Let your hairstylist know you are pregnant and ask to try not to allow chemicals to touch the scalp. Breathing ammonia fumes could be harmful to the developing baby in the first trimester.
Opt for highlights instead of a global hair colour. They are relatively safer as the dye is enclosed in foil and isn't absorbed into the skin. Alternatively you could use vegetable dyes such as henna as they are likely to be safer during pregnancy.
Avoid certain nail treatments

When it comes to nailcare, avoid acrylic nails as the chemicals and adhesives can contain cyanoacrylate, which can be harmful. This substance can be inhaled as dust when nails are filed, so wear a mask and make sure that there is proper ventilation.
Check whether the instruments have been sterilised and ask the nail expert not to cut your cuticles (this is mainly to prevent infections which could expose you and your baby to bacteria and germs.)
Take care of your skin
Use oil-free cosmetics and wash your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. This will prevent acne breakouts. If your acne still persists, go to a dermatologist who can prescribe erythromycin for it. Avoid retin A or tetracycline as they can cause birth defects. Wear sunscreen with good SPF even at home. This will prevent tanning and dark spots.
Pregnant women are often worried about stretch marks. Though they are not completely avoidable, you can still reduce their appearance or occurrence. Rub vitamin E oil or olive oil on the areas which are most likely to be affected. You can even rub lime juice on existing stretch marks to lighten them. Keep your skin moisturised at all times to help lessen the appearance of stretchmarks.
Tips to look a ravishing mum-to-be
To look trendy during your pregnancy, wear comfortable yet fashionable clothing which will give you that extra confidence to step out in style. Opt for maxi dresses, palazzo pants, long skirts and even tunics and kurtas. Bear in mind to choose a fabric which is soft on the skin. Various brands have a maternity range which offers stylish clothes for pregnant women.
Wear the right shoes. Avoid wearing pencil-heels, but you can still opt for a slight heel like wedges. But make sure the shoe have a good grip and support your feet and don't put pressure on your lower back. While heels are bad, completely flat shoes are also out of bounds. Completely flat shoes can cause lower back pain just like heels can.
Opt for natural face packs and make-up for the upkeep of your skin. For example, rubbing pomegranate seeds or beet root to give you a natural lip colour. You can even opt for skin-friendly cosmetics which do not have any chemicals in them like mineral make-up.
Make a statement with your hair. Many women may be skeptical of using too many cosmetics but they can still look ravishing by styling their hair in a trendy way. Try new hairstyles like French braid, fishtail, classic buns, etc. You could also experiment with your looks by opting for a fresh, new haircut.
Be happy, feel beautiful and blessed and enjoy this phase. Laugh, exercise and eat right to stay ravishing from within and give birth to a healthy baby.
Another pregnancy snag that you need to avoid is stretch marks. They appear as your bump makes its presences felt. Treat them as soon as you see those marks on your belly. Massaging with essential oils is one way of treating pregnancy stretch marks to keep them at bay and look really ravishing.
Remember that essential oils are safe to be used during pregnancy when used in formulations like Bio-oil which have gone through clinical trials. This formulation is a combination of plant extracts and vitamins suspended in an oil base. It contains Vitamin A & E and essential oils like calendula, lavender, rosemary, chamomile and purcellin. Clinical trials have shown that 100% of subjects showed a remarkable reduction in existing stretch marks when the product was used.
