Come winters and buying petroleum jelly becomes a norm. Many people use petroleum jelly instead of moisturisers to counter problems of the dry and flaky skin. Usually chapped lips, cracked heels, elbows and knees are the area where we apply petroleum jelly the most. People with excessively dry skin use petroleum jelly all over the body replacing their heavy duty moisturiser. To know if excessive use of petroleum jelly is good, we spoke to Dr Narmada Matang, Dermatologist, Neo Skin Clinic, Powai to know if it is beneficial. Here are some beauty hacks using petroleum jelly that will save your day.

Here is what she has to say, Petroleum Jelly is a mixture of mineral oils and waxes, its main ingredient petroleum helps retain moisture by creating a water protective barrier. It helps improve and heal the skin barrier function. Chapped lips cracked heels dry flaky skin on elbows and knees heals fast with this. We as dermatologists have been using this as a mainstay moisturizer in extreme dry skin conditions such as ichthyosis for a long time. Petroleum jelly s benefits come from its main ingredient petroleum, which helps seal your skin with a water-protective barrier. This helps your skin heal and retain moisture. Here are 50 uses of petroleum jelly which we didn t know.

Here are few ways in which petroleum jelly is useful for your skin:

  1. It helps to heal minor burns and keeps the area itch free.
  2. Applying petroleum jelly after a shower as an occlusive moisturizer prevents your skin from drying out. You can also use it for dry noses during cold or allergy season.
  3. Soak your feet in warm water with some salt added to it. Towel-dry thoroughly and apply petroleum jelly and wear clean cotton socks. It will help to heal cracked heels.
  4. It can be used as the best hand care cream. Our skin naturally has a mixture of oils (epidermal lipids) and water to help keep it remain soft and supple. But too much hand washing leads to dry, irritated skin leading to a skin disease such as eczema or even the normal ageing process can strip this protection and cause dryness on our hands. The oils in petroleum jelly help to seal in moisture and the thick ointment stays on the surface of the skin longer than any other water-based lotions, promoting longer healing. Don t worry about greasy residue. Rub a small amount of jelly onto hands and cuticles until it soaks in.
  5. Slather petroleum jelly all over your body for overnight moisturising it is absolutely safe and keeps your whole body smooth and supple, next.
