For a change, I decided to colour my hair on my own and here is a breakdown of my experience of colouring my hair at home.

I had coloured my hair twice earlier from golden brown to caramel so this time I was looking for something in red. I gave my hair a middle parting and divided the hair sections from ear to ear to form four quadrants. I then undid the sections one by one and coloured my hair from the roots to the tips ensuring that the dye was well distributed. And it worked. In just about 10 minutes I had a new colour as opposed to 20 minutes at the salon. You can try using these natural dyes to cover grey hair at home.

Before colouring my hair, I also took a few tips from my peers who tried colouring their hair at home. So here are a few colouring hacks I followed.

  • My very first task was to test the colour for an allergic reaction so that I do not get unpleasant scalp surprises later.
  • Then I dabbed my hairline with petroleum jelly to prevent the stains on my forehead.
  • While holding the bottle I made sure that I held it at the base rather than in the centre. It was easier to squeeze the tube hard and apply the cream on my hair.
  • There s nothing more important than conditioning post colouring. Not only does it help to retain the colour for a longer period but it also preserves the hair texture.

Verdict I think I will continue to dye my hair at home whenever I want a new highlight for my hair. I always end up feeling guilty after spending so much money in the parlour. Here's how often should you colour your hair.
