The disadvantage of using an expired moisturiser isn t just that it will be less efficient, but it could also lead to irritation and possible bacterial infection. If you have a tough time keeping track of when you bought the skin product, we have some tips from Dermatologist Dr Chaitali Dixit, the founder of Contura clinic, Bangalore, to help you find out that your moisturiser has gone bad.
Change in colour: Skincare products like moisturisers are too sensitive to light, so if it has turned brownish or yellowish in colour it is time to toss it. To make sure that they remain active, store them in a cool place away from light. It is also better that you buy products packaged in opaque and air-tight tubes to prevent it from light and heat.
Change in texture and consistency: If your moisturiser looks exceptionally thick or thin or too grainy, it may be an early indication that your product is breaking down. This could mean that the soluble chemicals are separating the product is no longer going to be effective. The antioxidants and retinoids in a moisturiser can break down and clump together over time. You can instead try using this quick and easy homemade moisturiser.
Check the expiry date: Moisturisers have a shelf life of eighteen months, but if you have been using one too judiciously for years now, it is the time that you throw it away and get a new tube for yourself. Writing the purchase date on a product with a marker can be a good way to determine how long the product can last.
Change in smell: If your moisturiser has a foul or rancid smell, it is the time that you toss it away. Here's your guide to selecting moisturiser based on your skin type.
Contamination: If you see any black spots on your moisture it could be contaminated with fungus or bacteria. Toss it immediately as using it could lead to an infection. When you use a formula with chemicals that are deteriorating, you could develop a contact allergy. You could notice redness on your skin after use.
