Though sunscreen is an essential skincare product we should use 365 days of the year, many only use it during the summer months. When the sun is brighter, the damage is also harsher which means you need extra protection this time of the year. Celebrity skincare expert Dr Jaishree Sharad tells us how to pick the right sunscreen according to your skin type.

If you have dry skin

Dry skin often needs more moisture in it to keep it looking supple. Instead of applying a moisturiser and then a sunscreen, opt for one that does both. Dr Sharad suggests using a cream based sunscreen. A few brands that offer this type are Shadowz Silk sunscreen, Sebamed sunscreen.

If you have oily skin

Oily skin feels greasier during the summers due to the heat and constant sweating. You may not need a moisturiser most of the time but you can t step out in the sun without a sunscreen. Opt for a gel based or matte sunscreen, advises the doctor. You could try brands like Lotus gel or Anthelios dry touch by La Roche Posay.

If you have combination skin

Combination skin is a mix of oily and dry or normal skin where some parts are greasier than the rest. If you have this skin type, use a sunscreen which is in the form of a spray or lotion. Sebamed spray or Suncros lotion are brands you could try.

If you have mature skin

Mature or ageing skin needs extra care as sun exposure worsens the skin and also makes it look older. People with this skin type also have to keep the skin hydrated. She suggests using a suntan lotion. Vichy Capital Soleil is a brand you can opt for.

Other tips to keep in mind:

  • Use a sunscreen with SPF 30 for daily use.
  • Use SPF 50 if you have existing pigmentation or if you are going to the beach or the hill station.
  • Make sure your sunscreen offers both UVA and UVB protection.
  • On the cover of the sunscreen, look for words SPF which is a sign of UVB protection and PA ++ which is a sign of UVA protection.
  • Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before you step out on the exposed parts.
  • Reapply it after every few hours as it will wear off by then.
