I am a 26-year old girl with unruly hair. I visit the salon and get my hair blow dried twice A week as my hair gets very unmanageable otherwise. My friends tell me I am damaging my hair! Are they right? Can blow drying my hair so often cause damage?

Nothing can beat the feeling of walking out of a salon with fresh and flawless blow dried hair. But it is true that blow drying your hair too often can damage your locks. The heat treatment can make the cuticles of your hair dry and brittle. It can also cause your hair shaft to split and even break. Your hair also gets dull and loses its natural shine. According to make-up and hair stylist Janet D Souza, you should not blow dry your hair more than once in 14 days. You can instead try using one of these home remedies to manage your unruly hair and make them softer. However, whenever you blow dry your hair, make sure that you keep the following tips in mind to reduce the damage.

  • Use a heat-protecting serum or a spray before blow drying your hair to minimise the damage.
  • It may take a little longer to blow your hair dry, but use the lowest heat to protect your hair from damage.
  • If you blow dry your hair, do use a moisturising hair mask once a week to keep your hair nourished.
  • Try blow drying your hair with cold air as it will make blow drying less damaging.
