scar on faceI am a 24-year-old woman. I had an insect bite on my chin which left a scar. Initially, it led to an allergy but is fine now. Even though the bite has healed, the scar has turned black in colour. I haven't taken any medication for it. What should I do to get rid of the black scar?

If the rash has healed and the area has now turned black, you most likely have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The mark will fade over time but in case you want it to go away faster, apply sunscreen every four hours of at least SPF 30++ and try Lumifast Brightening Minute Mask (www.cosmedic.in) for 10 minutes, thrice a week to help lighten it quickly.

Health.india.com tip

A few home remedies that can help lighten the scar are lemon juice, curd and aloe vera gel.

Cut a lemon in half and squeeze out the juice. Now apply it with a cotton ball on the scar. Leave it for half-an-hour to an hour and then wash it off. Repeat this every day till the scar lightens.

Another tip is to use curd or dahi. According to Ayurveda, the regular application of buttermilk (the thin liquid left behind after removing the cream from milk in the form of butter) on darkened skin can help keep the skin cool and refresh it.

To use aloe vera gel, cut the outer layers of the aloe leaf, squeeze out the thick jelly-like substance and apply this to the area of darkened skin. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and then wash off with water. (Read: How can I get fair skin?)
