highlightinghairThose tired of the regular done-to-death highlights for hair and left unimpressed with the ombr trend that's been around for almost a year now, there's a new offering. Created by US-based colourist Aura Friedman, Splashlights refer to a horizontal band of bleached hair that stretches from ear to ear. She explained,

'I wanted to create the effect that a laser beam is hitting your hair at a certain spot.' The technique involves painting bleach onto a small horizontal section of hair, starting with the under layers, then the top hair and covering all the hair above and below the stripe with a colour close to one's natural shade. Looks like the effect has already found quite a few takers. (Also read: Hair straightening To do or not to do?)

Creating a shine line
Najeeb Ur Rehman, PPS manager, Schwarzkopf Professional India says this technique requires medium and light colours, starting from a medium base colour from the roots and then using a light colour through the curve of the head and again a medium colour, to create a horizontal shine line or splash light.

'Maintenance-wise use a colour protective shampoo and conditioner which not only preserves colour pigment but also offers UV protection and don't forget to add some anti-frizz gloss serum. Ideally, this technique is for straight hair but if the hair is wavy use a flat iron to make the hair look straight. Browns and reds, violet tones are ideal for this technique.'

Next big hair trend
This highlighting technique has become popular and could be the next hair trend of 2014 but we can't tell how far it will go, says Carole Robequin, Senior Manager Training and Head-Creative Team, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, India. 'While not for everyone, this could be a trendsetting hairstyle for those who want to stand out and try a bolder look that doesn't include the current pastel and ombr palette. Though the currently trending splashlight, includes contrast colouring with bleach, you can have many variations. Instead of opting for blonde and a very light contrast colour, you can have a moderate colour, depending on your preference,' she says.

For fun, fashion-forward women
Tisha Kapur Khurana, Beauty Expert and Executive Director, Bottega Di Lungavita, Officina Farmaceutica Italia says splashlights also called the 'Halo Look' is ideal for those who love to experiment with their locks.

'Splashlights come with an advantage, since this is anyway in the middle of your hair, so your hair can grow out almost five to six inches without it looking like it needs a touch-up. Generally with streaks and global colour, as your hair grows it starts to look shabby. This trend is perfect for fun, younger, more fashion forward women.'
