There are a million products in the drugstore that promise a quick fix to your chapped lips but while a fruity-flavoured balm may be tempting, they also contain ingredients that good is doing more harm than good to your lips. So cosmetologist Dr Nandita Das asks you to step away from the lip balm if it contains these ingredients.

Menthol or phenol

Yes, menthol can provide an immediate cooling sensation but it can also cause irritation and make your lips sensitive. So it is best that you avoid lip balms with menthol or phenol. Instead, look for products with shea butter that will not only lock moisture in your lips but also give you soft, kissable lips. These shocking facts about lipsticks might just keep you off them.

Vitamin E

While vitamin E can be excellent to heal your skin, some people can have allergic reactions to the application of topical vitamin E. You can instead try applying beeswax on your lips as it can seal the moisture on your lips without the risk of irritation.

Fragrances

Yes, fragrances make the lip balms smell and taste a little better but you may also have allergic reactions to the fragrances present in the lip balm. Cinnamon related compounds are some of the most common culprits. Here are 4 ways to make natural lip balm at home.

Here are a few more tips to keep your lips healthy

  • A simple home remedy to heal chapped lips is to apply a drop of ghee before you sleep. Apply it for a few days every night and see your lips heal soon.
  • Make sure your lips are free of any lipstick or lip gloss at the end of the day. Wipe it off gently with a wet cotton ball; never rub them vigorously to remove make-up.
  • Avoid sharing lip cosmetic and balms with others as your saliva gets transferred to them when you lick them with your tongue.
