Skin tone is determined by the amount of melanin or pigment that is present in your skin. It doesn't change due to exposure to the sun. Your skin tone can be any of these: Cool, warm or neutral. Here's what these skin tones mean:

  • Cool: hint of bluish, pink or reddish skin tone
  • Warm: Hints towards yellow, sallow, peach or golden
  • Neutral: Doesn't have any distinct undertone of pink or yellow rather the skin's natural colour is more evident.

Here are a few tricks that are used to find out your skin tone. It is essential to know your skin tone especially when you are a buying a foundation that matches your skin tone. Here are a few tricks that professional makeup artist, Falguni Shah has suggested :

The vein trick: Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist, this is the quickest and easiest way to determine your skin tone. If your veins appear blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone. If green you have a warm skin tone. And if you can't determine it you have a neutral skin tone.

How your skin reacts to the sun: The amount of melanin in your skin determines how it reacts to sun exposure. Therefore, if you tan easily, you have a warm or neutral skin tone. If it burns and doesn't tan, you have a cooler skin tone.

White paper trick: Look in a mirror and try to see how your skin looks in contrast to the white paper. If your skin appears yellowish beside the white paper, you have a warm skin tone. If pink, rosy or blueish-red you have a cool skin tone whereas if it looks grey, your skin has an olive complexion with a neutral undertone. If you can't determine any yellow olive or pink undertone, you have a neutral skin tone.
