Hair health is a common concern, particularly in extreme weather conditions. Dr Kalyani Deshmukh, Consultant Dermatologist at Traya, shares her insights: "As a dermatologist, I often encounter patients concerned about the adverse effects of extreme weather conditions on their hair. High temperatures and increased exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and humidity can severely damage hair, leading to dryness, frizziness, and breakage. One effective and time-honoured method to counteract these effects is the practice of regular hair oiling".

Oiling is crucial for maintaining healthier and shinier hair amidst the sweltering heat:

  1. Hydration and Moisture Retention: During hot weather, our hair can lose moisture rapidly due to excessive sweating and exposure to the sun. This leads to dry and brittle hair. Oils, mainly those rich in essential fatty acids like coconut, argan, and olive oils, can penetrate the hair shaft, providing deep hydration. These oils prevent the loss of internal moisture, ensuring that hair remains supple and hydrated.
  2. Protection Against UV Damage: The sweltering heat often increases UV exposure, harming hair health. UV rays can weaken hair's protein structure, leading to colour fading and increased susceptibility to damage. Natural oils, especially sesame and avocado, contain antioxidants that can offer UV protection. These antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure, thereby protecting hair from structural damage and maintaining its natural shine and colour.
  3. Scalp Health: High temperatures can cause the scalp to dry and irritated, sometimes leading to dandruff or other conditions. Regular oiling nourishes the hair and soothes and hydrates the scalp, which has antimicrobial properties that help keep the scalp free from infections and inflammation. Massaging oil into the scalp can also improve blood circulation, promoting healthy hair growth.
  4. Reduction of Frizz and Improved Manageability: Humidity, an everyday companion of hot weather, can cause hair to become frizzy and unmanageable. Oils smooth the hair cuticle, reducing frizz and making hair more manageable. They add a layer of smoothness and shine, improving the hair's appearance and making it easier to style.
  5. Nourishment and Strengthening: Frequent oiling provides essential nutrients that strengthen the hair from within the hair follicles, promoting more robust and healthier hair. For instance, castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid and omega-6 fatty acids, enhancing hair growth and reducing hair fall. Ricinoleic acid, with its hydrating, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and strengthening properties, plays a significant role in hair care, especially when dealing with the challenges of sweltering heat.
