On my WhatsApp all girls group there is always a debate whether facials are worth it or not. Most of my friends love them and regularly schedule appointments in parlours. They talk about their relaxing experience and the deep cleansing ritual. I don't prefer shelling Rs 1000 for someone to wash and massage my face. I mean I can easily do it at home. This debate may never settle but I got an inside scoop on facials from my cosmetologist Nandita Das who will be working on my own bridal make-up. Here are few pros and cons of facials according to her.
Pros
Regular facials can help wipe out your skin care problems: Elements such as weather, working for long hours, stress and a poor diet can lead to myriads of skin problems. A good facial can prevent breakouts and renew the skin from within. They also help eradicate the bacteria that leads to inflammation during skin breakouts.
Reduces the signs of ageing: Going for a facial once a month can help in reducing the signs of ageing. The massage helps improve blood circulation and opens up the skin pores., which is important for the skin to breathe. The rush of blood flow to the skin reduces the appearance of wrinkled and dry skin.
Exfoliates the skin: Facials help scraping off the dead cells from the skin. The removal of blackheads ensures removal of dirt, oil and clogs from the skin making the skin feel bright, supple and soft.
Cons
Not all estheticians are thoroughly trained: Your estheticians cannot solve all your skin problems. Most of them are not even thoroughly trained. Many do not even know the difference between a blackhead and a whitehead and try to extract all the bumps that are there on the face. According to dermatologists, whiteheads and pimples should not be extracted. This is because when you extract them, there is a much higher risk of irritation and marks.
Yes you can get the same results at home: A facial may make your skin feel refreshed but it won't make your skin cleaner. In fact, your daily cleansing routine of washing the face in the morning and evening can provide enough cleansing to your skin. Natural ingredients can work wonders for your skin. Only applying malai and multani mitti on your face is good for a deep cleanse.
The facialist is not taught how to pop pimples: A good facialist can help get rid of those irritating black bumps on your face caused by clogged pores but they do not know how to pop pimples. So they won't help you get rid of them. In fact, they can leave you with a scarred face after the facial.
You may not see immediate results: Almost all of us believe that getting a facial done will make our skin glow instantly. This is however not true so blowing money for an hour treatment may not make much sense. To get a glow, you should visit your dermatologist who can give you treatments that will give you guaranteed results with minimal risk. You can also use a sandalwood or a clay pack at home for that instant glow.
After going through this list, do you still think a facial is a necessity? Comment and let us know.
