Apple cider vinegar is emerging as the new health drink. There are claims that it can help you with weight loss, get rid of dandruff, control diabetes, gives your hair a natural shine, gets rid of body odour and various other benefits. But is it really effective?

Dr Tejender Kaur Sarna, Nutritionist and Lifestyle Coach, says that apple cider vinegar is effective in many ways, but the effects start showing only after you have used it regularly for at least 30 to 35 days. She says that apple cider vinegar is low in sugar, can improve insulin sensitivity, control acidity, acidity, GERD, hiccups, soothe a sore throat and lower blood cholesterol level.

1. Colour--Dr Sarna says that the colour of apple cider vinegar can vary from lemon yellow to brownish orange. The colour of the vinegar differs depending on the colour of the apple peels it is made from. If the apple was pale pink in colour, the vinegar will have a yellowish colour, whereas if the vinegar is made from dark red apple, it will be darker. A few brands also sell bleached apple cider vinegar, which is colourless or white in colour.

2. Acidity--Dr Sarna advises to the check the label before buying apple cider vinegar. The label will mention the acidity of the vinegar and the vinegar with 5% acidity works best. Also, follow the instructions on the label and store the bottle as mentioned.

Unfiltered apple cider vinegar contains the mother of the vinegar which is a compound that is formed during the natural process of fermentation. Dr Sarna says that it is best to buy unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Unfiltered apple cider vinegar is darker in colour and is cloudy. It is also believed to be more potent.

4. Brand--Dr Sarna recommends using apple cider vinegar from brands like American Garden and Vedic Delite.
