One should bear in mind a few important points to enjoy the festivities of Diwali. 1. If you are near people bursting crackers or in direct contact with it, be extremely careful. It is recommended to wear cotton clothes compared to nylon or synthetic, which are easily flammable and are more prone to catch fire and worsen burns.
2. A lot of chemical-like substances like charcoal, sulphur and potassium nitrate, etc. are present in these crackers and can cause skin irritation and infections. In case of minor burns, apply an antiseptic cream, keep the area open/un-bandaged. Major burn injuries should not be treated at home, seek medical intervention immediately.
3. It is obvious that one tends to wear a lot of makeup for a longer duration, during this time. Make sure you exfoliate your skin and remove all the make-up before going to bed, daily. Sleeping with your makeup on can cause great harm to your skin as it doesn t allow the skin to breathe. (Read: Diwali skincare routine by Shahnaz Husain)
Acne and Diwali -- here's what you can do
In the past few years, patients complain of acne (pimples) post Diwali which can be due to unrestricted consumption of fried food and sweets. Application of cosmetics during the festival and various home-made concoctions may irritate the skin and cause irritant/allergic dermatitis (irritation of skin). Patients with sensitive skin complain of irritation, photosensitivity and worsening of symptoms which can be attributed to the pollution. Make sure to wash your face when you return indoors.
1. People with dry skin should use good emollients and cleansers instead of using soap over the face. Sunscreen is of utmost importance, followed by usage of a good moisturizer at night.
2. For people with oily skin, non-comedogenic (blocking the pores of the skin) cosmetics should be used to avoid breakouts; a salicylic acid-based face wash can be used to clean the face. Restrict washing face to not more than 3 times a day.
3. Those with normal skin can undergo skin rejuvenating lasers or radiofrequency along with a wide array of chemical peels that can be chosen depending on the skin type. (Read: Expert tips to prevent skin allergy this Diwali)
