I have recently started swimming again and have been more conscious about skin and hair care than before. Here are a few tips that help me and will benefit you too if you plan to take up swimming:
1. Choose the right swimming costume/suit: If your skin is sensitive to chemicals, make sure you wear a full-length costume--the one with full sleeves and leggings upto ankles. You can also choose the one with a collar so that your neck is covered too. This will reduce direct contact of your skin with the water.
2. Choose the right swimming cap: Nowadays, the latex caps have taken over the conventional ones that you could tie around your chin. The latex one's look good but end up breaking your hair, especially when you have long hair. First of all, latex caps are difficult to wear and don't slip over your head easily. And in the process, you break a lot of hair as there's a lot of friction. If you have long hair, it is best to buy the conventional caps.
3. Swimming Goggles: They prevent the chlorinated water from affecting your eyes and also keeps infections at bay.
4. Sunscreen: Sun tan is a big worry when you start swimming. Wearing a sunscreen before entering the pool makes no sense at all because it wears off once you enter the pool. However, there are waterproof sunscreen that offer protection from the sun for up to 40 minutes, but they are not easily available in India.
5. Showering immediately after swimming: It is best to take a quick shower and let the chlorine wash off your body. You can bathe properly once you come home. Prolonged skin- contact with chlorine dries the skin. Don't forget to moisturise after you bathe.
