laser hair removalUnwanted hair on the face and body can be cumbersome to manage especially when the growth is thick and dark. Women are always looking for easy ways which will help them get rid of hair in a painless manner once and for all. Laser technology has made this possible to quite an extent but because this technique is fairly new, people still are sceptical of opting for it. We ask Dr Anju Methil, a Dermatologist, Cosmetologist and Founder of Skin & Shape clinic, to shed more light on this method of hair removal.

What kind of results can people expect from laser hair removal?

Firstly, this is not a hair removal method rather a hair reduction method so people need to understand that the hair will become finer and lesser but they will not be completely hair-free. Even so, the growth will be very mild which they may or may not get rid of with traditional methods. You can expect 80-90% hair reduction after six to seven sessions.

How long-lasting are the results?

The results are permanent. Once the hair follicle is destroyed, the same one does not grow hair. However, some people get hair growth again even after laser. This could primarily be due to hormonal changes or imbalance. They can opt for 1-2 maintenance sessions along with treatment for getting their hormonal balance right.

What are the benefits of opting for this treatment?

Here are a few benefits:

  • Thinner, finer hair
  • Painless hair reduction
  • Long-lasting results
  • Cost-effective in the long run
  • Not too time consuming

When do people not see results?

Women who suffer from PCOD, thyroid, etc will not see very optimal results but once they take proper medication, they can definitely opt for laser hair reduction. They may just need more sessions as they may have increased testosterone levels.

What can one do after laser hair reduction to manage the slight hair growth they have?

Most people will have very fine, baby hair growth which does not really need any maintenance. But if you still want to be completely hairless, opt for methods like shaving or bleaching. Waxing won't be of much help as the hair will be quite fine and may not come off easily using wax.

Does one's skin colour have an effect on the kind of results they get?

Laser shows good results suited for Indian skin which is not too dark and not too white either. The principle is, the thicker and darker the hair, the better are the results. Laser is also effective on very dark skin only the frequency needs to be set right.

What are the costs involved in this method?

The cost varies from a few thousands to a few lakhs depending on the area you are opting for. If it is a small body part such as the upper lip or the face, it can be as low Rs 3-4 thousand and if you plan to opt for a full body laser hair reduction, the cost can go up to Rs 1.5-2 lakh. This cost is for a set of 6-7 sessions.
