DIY coffee oil to grow your hair

Coffee is not just for drinking anymore.

Coffee means a lot of things to a lot of people: workout fuel, brain booster, energy drink and sleep suppressant. But did you know that you could grow your hair using coffee? That’s right. Apart from shaking you awake when you are sleepy, the caffeine in the coffee can also slap your dormant hair follicles awake and make them produce hair. Don’t believe us? Studies1 say that caffeine can even block the damaging effects of testosterone, the number one enemy of the hair follicle. Some researchers treated the dormant follicles of men suffering from alopecia with coffee and were stunned by the results. Coffee, at certain concentrations, was able to regrow the hair from the follicles that were damaged by testosterone. In another study, male and female hair scalps were treated with testosterone and caffeine. It showed that caffeine did indeed cause hair elongation and that the female scalps were more sensitive to it.2 Also Read - Caffeine: Is it safe to consume it everyday? Find out

There are a couple of ways in which you could try treating your hair to caffeine. You could either create a rinse out of black coffee and keep it on for 20 minutes or simply brew a coffee oil, like I did, to improve hair growth. You need two basic ingredients and the rest you could improvise as you like. Also Read - Essential vitamins for hair growth: Why you need to include these in your diet ASAP

Here is a recipe:

4 tablespoon coconut oil

2 teaspoon coffee powder (not the instant variety)

Method

Heat a small kadai on the stove and slowly add the oil and add the coffee grounds or powder. Ensure that the oil doesn’t start smoking. Keep on the flame and stir slowly for 10 minutes. Once done, keep it aside and let it cool before application.

Alternatively, the ones who are too lazy to light the stove can even heat the mixture in a microwave oven instead. Mix both the ingredients and heat it in the microwave for two minutes. If you want to boost its effect, you can also add some castor oil, curry leaves or to the mixture.

The end product will look something like this:

coffee hair growth oil

As you can see, the oil is full of coffee grounds. Apply it directly to the scalp. The rough coffee grounds will help slough off dead cells from the scale. (works well if you have dandruff) The scrubbing will also help stimulate blood circulation in the scalp. I have been using the oil for over three weeks, but it’s too soon to say whether my hair has actually grown. But it has definitely put an end to hair fall. Try it today and see if it works for you!
